Getting Married in the State of New Jersey

 

In the state of New Jersey, you must apply for a marriage license at your county Municipal Clerk office. The marriage license is valid for 30 days. There is a mandatory 3-day waiting period between the time it is picked up, and when the ceremony can be legally performed. Finally, the signed marriage license must be returned to the issuing office before it expires.

Marriage License Fee: $28 (you pay the county not the Minister)

 

Marriage Law Requirements for New Jersey Marriage Licenses:

  • Minimum age to marry is 16 w/parental consent.

  • In order to get married in New Jersey, couples must apply for and obtain a marriage license.

  • The fee for a New Jersey marriage license is $28 and is required at the time of application.

  • Marriage licenses are handled by the Registrar of  Vital Statistics.

  • There is a 72-hour waiting period.

  • No blood test or residency requirements.

  • The New Jersey marriage license is valid for 6 Months.

 

Be sure to contact your local NJ County clerk office in advance of the wedding to find out on what days and during what hours the Registrar will be in the office. Some locales will require an appointment.
